The second round of the Scottish Government’s CARES Community Energy Generation Growth Fund is now open for applications.

Delivered through the Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES) and administered by the Local Energy Scotland consortium, the fund supports communities to engage with, participate in, and benefit from the transition to net zero.

The Growth Fund helps community organisations to develop renewable energy projects such as wind and solar photovoltaic (PV). Support is available at the feasibility, development, or construction stages, and can include grant funding, advice, and loan funding.

This round of funding is focused on projects that can achieve a specific, significant milestone by 17 March 2026. Applications close on Monday 8th September 2025.

Who Can Apply?

Eligible organisations include:

  • Scottish registered and incorporated non-profit distributing organisations

  • Community groups aiming to develop, own, and operate renewable generation projects

  • Established and constituted groups such as Development Trusts or Community Energy/Climate Action Groups

  • Charities, including Arms Length External Organisations (ALEOs)

Applications must be submitted directly by the organisation or group, not by contractors or installers.

Funding Available

  • Feasibility and development support: grants or assistance via CARES framework contractors

  • Installation and construction support: grants and loans

How to Apply

Applicants must read the full funding guidance before applying. Full details, including guidance and application steps, are available on the Local Energy Scotland website.

  • New applicants should submit an expression of interest via the CARES project portal, so eligibility can be confirmed before a full application.
