Recognising and Celebrating Young Volunteers
Volunteering is a fantastic way for young people to make a difference in their communities while developing valuable skills, confidence and experience. It can also enhance college, university and job applications by demonstrating commitment, teamwork, leadership and communication skills.
There are a range of nationally recognised awards and qualifications available to celebrate volunteering achievements and support young people’s personal and professional development.
Awards and Qualifications Available for You:
Saltire Awards
The Saltire Awards recognise the contribution of young volunteers aged 11 to 25 across Scotland.
Whether you’re volunteering for the first time or have already dedicated many hours to helping others, the Saltire Awards provide a great way to record and celebrate your achievements.
The awards include:
- Challenge Award – For those taking their first steps into volunteering.
- Approach Award – Awarded after completing 10 and 25 hours of volunteering.
- Ascent Award – Awarded after completing 50, 100, 200 and 500 hours of volunteering.
- Summit Award – Recognises exceptional commitment and outstanding contributions to volunteering.
Organisations with multiple young volunteers can create a Group Administration Account, allowing them to record volunteering hours and request certificates on behalf of their volunteers.
Volunteering Skills Award (SCQF 3-5)
The Award in Volunteering Skills is a nationally recognised qualification available at SCQF Levels 3, 4 and 5.
Typically delivered through schools and colleges, the qualification enables young people to:
- Understand the role and value of volunteering.
- Plan and carry out volunteering activities.
- Reflect on their experiences and personal development.
- Gain formal recognition for the skills they have developed.
This qualification provides valuable evidence of volunteering experience for further education and employment.
Youth Scotland Awards
Youth Scotland offers nationally recognised awards that celebrate the achievements of young people through youth work and volunteering.
These include:
- Dynamic Youth Awards (DYA) – Available for young people aged 10 and over, recognising participation, learning and achievement.
- Youth Achievement Awards (YAA) – Available for young people aged 14 and over, encouraging young people to take responsibility, lead projects and support others.
These awards recognise the skills, knowledge and confidence gained through volunteering and community involvement.
