The Better Breaks programme is now open for applications for the 2026–2027 funding year.
Better Breaks is part of the Short Breaks Fund, operated by Shared Care Scotland on behalf of the National Carer Organisations and the Scottish Government. Around £1.7 million in funding is available for 12-month grants (April 2026 – March 2027) to support short breaks projects for disabled children and young people (aged 20 and under) and their carers (both adult and young carers).
About the Programme
Better Breaks funds a wide variety of projects and services, including activities and short breaks for:
-
Disabled children and young people without their carers
-
Families to enjoy together
-
Young or sibling carers alongside the person they care for
Projects may include residential breaks, days out, and regular shorter sessions that provide meaningful respite and connection for families.
Who Can Apply
Applications are welcome from third sector organisations operating in Scotland. Applicants do not need to be a registered charity, but must have a constitution stating that their purposes are solely charitable and that they deliver public benefit.
Eligible projects must demonstrate how their activities will benefit both disabled children and young people and their carers by providing a break from their usual routine.
Application Deadline and How to Apply
Applications should be submitted via the online application form.
The closing date for applications is 5pm on Monday 3 November 2025.
