About the Fund

The West Lothian Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund supports local third sector organisations to deliver community-based activities that promote good mental health and wellbeing for adults across West Lothian.

The fund was established in 2021 and is part of a national Scottish Government programme, delivered locally through Third Sector Interfaces. To date, it has supported a wide range of grassroots initiatives helping people to stay well, feel connected and access support within their own communities.

The fund has a strong focus on prevention and early intervention, aiming to support people before mental health challenges reach crisis point.

What the Fund Aims to Achieve

The fund supports projects that:

  • Reduce social isolation and loneliness

  • Promote positive mental health and wellbeing

  • Strengthen community connection and resilience

  • Tackle poverty and inequality as key drivers of poor mental health

  • Support people impacted by the cost of living crisis

There is a particular emphasis on reaching people facing socio-economic disadvantage and other groups who may be at greater risk of poor mental health outcomes.

Who the Fund Supports

The fund is designed to support small, grassroots and community-led organisations working with adults aged 16 and over in West Lothian.

Funded organisations do not need to have mental health as their sole focus, but funded activity must clearly demonstrate how it improves mental health and wellbeing within the community.

Projects have supported a wide range of people, including (but not limited to):

  • People experiencing loneliness or isolation

  • People facing poverty or financial insecurity

  • Older people

  • People affected by trauma or bereavement

  • Disabled people and people with long-term health conditions

  • Neurodivergent people

  • People from minority ethnic communities

  • LGBTI communities

  • Refugees and people with no recourse to public funds

How the Fund Is Delivered

The fund is delivered locally through a partnership approach, with Voluntary Sector Gateway West Lothian acting as the lead organisation.

This local delivery model ensures funding decisions are informed by local knowledge, need and lived experience, and that investment is directed where it can have the greatest impact in communities.

In Years 5 and 6, the fund also forms part of the Scottish Government’s Fairer Funding Pilot, allowing some organisations to receive two-year funding to support longer-term planning and stability.
