A national consultation has opened on proposals to introduce a legal right to breaks for unpaid carers in Scotland.
There are an estimated 700,000 to 800,000 adult unpaid carers and around 27,000 young carers across Scotland. Supporting carers to have a life alongside caring, and to maintain their health and wellbeing, is vital.
Through the Care Reform (Scotland) Act 2025, a right to breaks for carers will be introduced. This consultation seeks views from carers and those who support them on how this right should be implemented in practice.
Feedback gathered will help shape the regulations and guidance to ensure the right to breaks is delivered effectively and consistently.
Consultation closes: Friday 22 May 2026
