Applications are now open for Action Earth 2026, a small grants programme delivered by Volunteering Matters, supporting volunteer‑led environmental projects across Scotland.

Funding to Support Local Environmental Action

Action Earth offers grants of up to £250 to volunteer groups working in urban areas or near population centres to carry out projects that enhance biodiversity and improve local green spaces.

Eligible activities include:

  • Creating or improving community gardens and shared greenspaces
  • Establishing wildflower meadows
  • Developing local ponds
  • Enhancing community woodlands
  • Building habitats and wildlife homes

The programme is designed to encourage practical, hands‑on projects that deliver visible environmental benefits while engaging communities.

Inclusive and Community‑Focused

A key aim of Action Earth is to support participation from people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. The programme encourages projects that not only improve biodiversity, but also contribute to health and wellbeing through outdoor activity.

Volunteering Matters welcomes applications from a wide range of groups and will prioritise those that:

  • Operate in areas experiencing social and/or economic deprivation
  • Help improve community health and wellbeing
  • Involve people with disabilities, health conditions, or those at risk of exclusion
  • Deliver significant environmental impacts or involve large numbers of participants

Groups of 15 or more volunteers are particularly encouraged to apply.

Important Information for Applicants

Applicants should note that:

  • Food growing cannot be the primary focus of the project
  • Projects must be completed, and feedback submitted, by Sunday 28 February 2027
  • There is currently no application deadline, allowing groups flexibility to apply when ready
