The Take a Break Scotland grant programme is now open for applications for 2026, offering financial support to parent carers across the country.

Funded by the Scottish Government and managed by Family Fund, the programme provides cash grants to parent carers—including eligible kinship carers—of disabled or seriously ill children and young people aged from birth up to 17 years.

Supporting Carers’ Wellbeing

The grant programme is designed to improve the quality of life, health and wellbeing of unpaid carers by helping them take a break from the daily demands of caring.

Recognising the wide-ranging needs of families, the funding is flexible and can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

  • Day trips and family outings
  • Short breaks or holidays
  • Paying for an additional carer
  • Travel expenses
  • Gardening or home improvements
  • Home entertainment equipment

This flexibility allows carers to tailor the grant to their individual circumstances and the interests of their family.

Flexible, Accessible Support

As a cash grant, the funding enables families to choose what works best for them, helping to reduce stress and create opportunities for rest, enjoyment, and time together.

The programme plays an important role in acknowledging the challenges faced by unpaid carers and supporting them to maintain their wellbeing while continuing their caring responsibilities.

Application Deadline

Applications for the 2026 round must be submitted by:

5:00pm on Monday 22 June 2026
