The Freelands Foundation has launched its new Learning Through Making Fund, offering grants of up to £25,000 to support innovative visual arts education projects across the UK.
The fund aims to encourage organisations to create hands-on learning experiences that prioritise creativity, experimentation and exploration through making.
The Foundation says:
“This fund is an invitation to reclaim space for experimentation, curiosity and material exploration. We want to learn what happens when organisations begin with materials, processes and play, rather than fixed outcomes, and what a small grant can unlock for artists, participants and communities.”
About the Fund
The Learning Through Making Fund supports organisations to explore creative approaches to learning through visual arts and making. Rather than requiring a fully developed project from the outset, the fund encourages ideas that place participation, curiosity and the creative process at their heart.
Grants of up to £25,000 are available for projects that help people engage with materials, processes and making techniques in accessible and meaningful ways.
Funding can be used for a range of costs, including:
- Materials and equipment
- Transport
- Specialist expertise
- Access to facilities
- Research and development
- Workshops and events
- Pilot projects
- Expanding existing programmes
Projects can run from a few days to several months but must take place between 1 January and 31 December 2027.
Who Can Apply?
The fund is open to a wide range of UK organisations delivering work for charitable or public benefit, including:
- Registered charities
- Community Interest Companies (CICs)
- Community Benefit Societies
- Local authority galleries and museums
- University-based arts organisations
Applicants should ensure they meet the full eligibility criteria before applying.
Online Application Support Sessions
The Freelands Foundation will host two free online sessions to help prospective applicants learn more about the fund and ask questions. Book via Eventbrite.
The sessions will take place on:
- Thursday 9 July 2026 | 10:30am – 12:00pm
- Wednesday 12 August 2026 | 10:30am – 12:00pm
Recordings and transcripts will be made available on the Freelands Foundation website after each session.

Applications are made through a simple one-stage process by completing an application form and submitting it by email.
Application deadline: 12:00pm on Friday 11 September 2026
Funding decisions are expected to be announced on 23 November 2026.
