Integr8 Befriending Service at West Lothian Youth Action Project is looking for compassionate volunteers to support young people aged 10–21 who may be experiencing isolation, anxiety or disconnection.
Many young people face challenges such as social pressures, reduced confidence, difficulties at school or changes in their home or community environment. Through one-to-one befriending, volunteers provide a supportive, consistent presence that helps young people build confidence, improve self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation.
The service focuses on promoting positive mental health and wellbeing by giving young people a safe space to talk, offload and explore how they are feeling, if they choose to.
Befriending matches are tailored to the needs of each young person and may take place face to face, remotely or through a blended approach. Face-to-face sessions could include going for a walk, chatting over a coffee or hot chocolate, playing games, taking part in creative activities, or enjoying outings such as bowling, pottery painting, trampolining or a trip to the cinema, depending on the young person’s age, interests and the available activity budget.
Could You Volunteer?
West Lothian Youth Action Project is looking for volunteers who can:
- Listen without judgement
- Be reliable and consistent
- Enjoy taking part in relaxed, age-appropriate activities
- Commit around 2–3 hours each week or fortnight
No previous qualifications or experience are required. If you’re kind, patient and willing to learn, you’ll receive comprehensive training, regular supervision and ongoing support throughout your volunteering journey.
Volunteering as a befriender is a rewarding opportunity to help a young person feel heard, valued and more connected, while making a lasting difference to their wellbeing.
