A fully funded opportunity is now available for community members residing in West Lothian and local organisations to enhance the skills of their frontline staff in suicide prevention and early intervention. This initiative aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and confidence to support those at risk.
The Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is an internationally recognised and evidence-based programme. This comprehensive training equips participants with the necessary skills to identify individuals who may be at risk of suicide and to intervene effectively and safely.
It is widely recognised that thoughts of suicide are often preceded by subtle behavioural changes, such as withdrawal, fatigue, or a general sense of not being oneself, rather than overt statements. With the appropriate training, individuals can develop the confidence to recognise these crucial signs and respond in a way that can potentially save lives.
Staff across a wide range of sectors, including education, the NHS, health and social care, youth work, and public services, are likely to encounter individuals experiencing a crisis. Notably, research indicates that individuals often confide in friends and family when experiencing suicidal thoughts, highlighting the importance of training community members alongside paid professionals.
Providing ASIST training demonstrates a significant commitment to mental health, safeguarding, and overall community wellbeing.
