New government regulations have come into force to give people receiving certain welfare benefits greater confidence to take part in volunteering without it automatically triggering a reassessment of their benefits.
Introduced by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the ‘right to try’ regulations are designed to reinforce the freedom for benefits claimants to volunteer while continuing to receive the support they are entitled to.
What Do the Changes Mean?
The new regulations make it clear that starting a volunteering role will not, by itself, lead to a reassessment of a person’s benefit claim.
However, if a reassessment has already been scheduled, it will still take place as planned. The regulations do not prevent or delay existing reviews.
Who Does This Apply To?
The changes apply to people receiving Universal Credit, along with a number of other benefits.
