New UK Easy Read Standards have been published to help organisations produce clearer, more consistent and accessible information for people who need or prefer Easy Read communication.

Published on 1 October 2026, the standards have been developed by the UK Easy Read Standards Working Group, established in 2024 with support from Disability Equality Scotland. The group brings together more than 50 people from over 30 organisations across the UK.

What is Easy Read?

Easy Read is an accessible communication format that combines simple language, pictures and clear layouts to make information easier to understand.

Originally developed by and for people with learning disabilities, Easy Read can also benefit people with a range of other communication and accessibility needs.

Why are the standards important?

The new standards aim to improve the quality and consistency of Easy Read materials produced across the UK, helping organisations communicate more effectively with the people they support.

They provide guidance on creating accessible information while encouraging organisations to involve Easy Read users in developing and reviewing materials.

For charities, community groups and third sector organisations, the standards offer a useful resource for making information, services and communications more inclusive.

What’s next?

The Working Group plans to develop an Easy Read version of the standards in collaboration with Easy Read users across the UK. Further events and guidance will also be introduced to support organisations in putting the standards into practice.

Organisations and individuals interested in contributing to this work or joining the Working Group are encouraged to get involved.
