A public health alert has been issued following a significant increase in drug-related harms and deaths in West Lothian. The alert highlights concerns over a suspected batch of heroin, reported to have a ‘red tinge’, which has been linked to severe adverse effects, including sudden collapse, breathing difficulties, and, in some cases, fatalities.

Who needs to be aware?

This alert is relevant for:

  • People who use drugs – Please take extra precautions (see below).
  • Family members, friends, and support workers – Be aware of the risks and ensure naloxone is available.
  • Professionals working with substance users – Share this information and encourage harm reduction practices.

Harm Reduction Advice

To reduce the risk of harm:
Dose low and go slow – Start with a small amount.
Avoid mixing substances, including prescribed medication and alcohol.
Never use alone – Have someone present who can help in an emergency.
Carry naloxone – This medication can reverse opioid overdoses, but multiple doses may be needed.
Call 999 in an emergency – If someone collapses or becomes unresponsive, seek urgent medical help.
