A public health alert has been issued following a significant increase in drug-related harms and deaths in West Lothian. The alert highlights concerns over a suspected batch of heroin, reported to have a ‘red tinge’, which has been linked to severe adverse effects, including sudden collapse, breathing difficulties, and, in some cases, fatalities.
Who needs to be aware?
This alert is relevant for:
- People who use drugs – Please take extra precautions (see below).
- Family members, friends, and support workers – Be aware of the risks and ensure naloxone is available.
- Professionals working with substance users – Share this information and encourage harm reduction practices.
Harm Reduction Advice
To reduce the risk of harm:
✔ Dose low and go slow – Start with a small amount.
✔ Avoid mixing substances, including prescribed medication and alcohol.
✔ Never use alone – Have someone present who can help in an emergency.
✔ Carry naloxone – This medication can reverse opioid overdoses, but multiple doses may be needed.
✔ Call 999 in an emergency – If someone collapses or becomes unresponsive, seek urgent medical help.
