Working Together for Better Health and Social Care

The West Lothian Integration Joint Board (IJB) brings together West Lothian Council and NHS Lothian to plan, commission and oversee adult health and social care services across West Lothian.

Its vision is:

“Working in partnership to improve wellbeing and reduce health inequalities across all communities in West Lothian.”

By integrating health and social care services, the IJB helps ensure that people receive more joined-up, person-centred support that is focused on improving outcomes, promoting independence and delivering care closer to home.

What the IJB Does

The Integration Joint Board is a legally separate organisation from both West Lothian Council and NHS Lothian. Under the Public Bodies (Joint Working) (Scotland) Act 2014, both organisations delegate a range of adult health and social care responsibilities to the IJB.

The Board is responsible for:

  • Developing the strategic direction for integrated health and social care services.
  • Planning and commissioning services to meet the needs of local communities.
  • Monitoring the quality and performance of services.
  • Managing the resources delegated by West Lothian Council and NHS Lothian.
  • Working with partners, including the voluntary sector, independent sector, unpaid carers and local communities, to improve health and wellbeing.

Integrated Health and Social Care

Integration aims to ensure that services work together seamlessly so people experience coordinated care rather than separate health and social care systems.

This approach supports:

  • Person-centred care.
  • Earlier intervention and prevention.
  • Greater independence.
  • Care delivered closer to home wherever possible.
  • Better outcomes for people using services and their carers.
