YouthVIP Report: Scotland’s Poverty Related Youth Volunteering Gap

Published: March 30, 2026

Recent research from YouthVIP has highlighted a gap in access to volunteering opportunities for young people living in more deprived areas of Scotland.

The report finds that young people from areas classified within Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) 1 and 2 face greater barriers to accessing and sustaining high-quality volunteering opportunities.

While many young people in these communities are interested in volunteering, the challenges they face mean they are less likely to participate compared to their peers in less deprived areas.

Volunteering can play an important role in helping young people to develop skills, build confidence and gain experience that supports them in learning, life and work. The report highlights that, due to these barriers, some young people are missing out on these valuable opportunities.

The findings provide important insight for organisations working with young people, particularly those looking to create more inclusive and accessible volunteering pathways.
