Highlighting World Mental Health Day: 10th October

As we observe World Mental Health Day today, it’s important to highlight the vital work of organisations making a difference in the mental health landscape. This month, we are proud to feature EnvironMentalHealth CIC, a Lived Experience Led Mental Health & Well-being Social Enterprise, responding to the national mental health crisis with a particular focus on the suicide crisis affecting men and young people.

Why Mental Health is More Important Than Ever

The national mental health crisis continues to grow, and we are seeing the devastating impact it is having, particularly on young people and men. EnvironMentalHealth CIC recognises that early intervention and prevention through First Aid for Mental Health is crucial in addressing these challenges. The organisation believes that mental health is a collective responsibility, involving communities, businesses, organisations, educational institutions, and individuals alike.

Crisis Intervention through ASIST Training

In addition to prevention, EnvironMentalHealth CIC also focuses on crisis intervention through their Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). This vital training equips participants with the skills to intervene and support individuals at risk of suicide. In a time where mental health crises are on the rise, having people trained in ASIST is key to providing immediate and effective support to those in urgent need.

A Co-productive Approach to Mental Health

One of the unique aspects of EnvironMentalHealth CIC is its co-productive model. This approach brings together organisations of all sizes, across all sectors, to collaborate in planning and delivering mental health courses. By fostering this kind of community partnership, they aim to raise awareness and improve mental health responses, creating greater cohesion and shared responsibility within our communities.

The philosophy of EnvironMentalHealth CIC is clear: First Aid for Mental Health should be accessible to everyone, regardless of an organisation’s financial situation. They believe that access to mental health training should not be limited by the size or budget of an organisation. Instead, they advocate for co-productive and collective solutions to tackle the complexities of the mental health crisis.

Acknowledging Our Community’s Commitment

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the 600+ staff and volunteers across West Lothian who have taken the time to train as First Aiders for Mental Health. Their dedication has better equipped them to support those in our community experiencing mental ill health or distress. By committing to these training programmes, they are playing a vital role in strengthening the mental health safety net within West Lothian.

Breaking Down Barriers

World Mental Health Day serves as a reminder that mental health is not a one-size-fits-all issue, and neither are the solutions. There are no simple answers to such complex challenges, but EnvironMentalHealth CIC is committed to being proactive. They understand the importance of working flexibly to meet the unique needs and limitations of every organisation they partner with.

As we observe World Mental Health Day, let’s remember the significance of early intervention, crisis intervention, and prevention in mental health. EnvironMentalHealth CIC is at the forefront of these efforts, encouraging all of us to take part in building communities that are better equipped to handle the mental health challenges we face.
