West Lothian Council’s Anti-Poverty Service invites you to the Tackling Poverty Conference – Poverty & Trauma, our first event during Challenge Poverty Week 2024. This important conference will explore the deep connections between poverty and trauma and provide insight into how we can work together to become more trauma-informed.

The event features presentations and interactive workshops focused on recognising the signs of trauma and creating supportive environments for those affected. You will have the opportunity to choose from three insightful workshops:

1. Working Together to Enable Change

  • Jackie Galbraith, Principal, West Lothian College
  • Jinty Dobson, Peer Navigator, The TRUST, West Lothian College
  • Mark Deans, The Scheme

This workshop highlights the collaborative efforts between West Lothian College, The TRUST, and The Scheme, showing how their work empowers individuals to believe in themselves and choose their own paths. Expect an interactive experience showcasing practical approaches to enable change.

2. Understanding Anger

  • Linden Raeburn, West Lothian Council

Anger is a natural human emotion, often linked to trauma. This workshop will delve into the causes and effects of anger, common triggers, and the relationship between anger and past trauma. Participants will also learn trauma-informed communication techniques.

3. Taking a Trauma-Informed Lens

  • Caroline Doyle, West Lothian Council Anti-Poverty Service
  • Saima Akhtar, West Lothian Council Anti-Poverty Service

This workshop offers open discussions around the prevalence of trauma in individuals experiencing poverty, how trauma affects their lives, and how we can tailor our responses using trauma-informed principles.
