Carers of West Lothian is seeking dedicated and empathetic individuals to join their team as volunteer drivers for young carers. This role is vital in ensuring that young carers can safely attend their support groups, providing them with much-needed respite and social interaction.
Purpose of the Role
The primary purpose of this role is to safely transport young carers to and from their support groups at Sycamore House. This contribution will significantly enhance their ability to participate in these crucial gatherings.
Key Tasks
Volunteer drivers will have the following responsibilities:
- Picking up young carers from their homes and transporting them to Sycamore House.
- Ensuring their safe return journey from Sycamore House back to their homes.
Key Skills and Qualities Required
To be successful in this role, volunteer drivers should possess the following skills and qualities:
- A careful and responsible driving style.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Empathy and a sensitive approach to the needs of young carers.
- Punctuality and reliability.
Commitment Required
Carers of West Lothian requests a commitment of up to 3 hours per week to help provide consistent support to young carers.
Induction, Training, and Ongoing Support
All volunteer drivers will receive a thorough induction from the Volunteer Coordinator. Additionally, ongoing support and guidance will be provided by both the Young Carer’s Team and the Volunteer Coordinator to ensure volunteers are confident and capable in their roles.

Expectations of Volunteers
As volunteer drivers, individuals will be expected to:
- Provide reliable transport to and from support groups.
- Hold a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record.
- Have access to a roadworthy car.
- Hold business car insurance.
- Ensure passenger safety by using appropriate seatbelts and booster seats provided by Carers of West Lothian.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding the young carers and any conversations during transport, reporting any concerns to a staff member.
- Immediately report any incidents, accidents, or disclosures to a staff member.
- Be punctual and ensure their ID card is visible when picking up young carers.
- Give plenty of notice if their availability changes.
- Agree to a Disclosure Scotland check, in line with PVG requirements.
Location of Volunteering
This volunteer role will involve driving in various areas around West Lothian, with Sycamore House as a central destination.
